New housing permits in Gilbert rebounded in 2009

After several years of sharp declines in the housing market, Gilbert in 2009 saw positive growth in new-home permits for the first time since 2004. The sounds of nail guns and hammers can be heard in a handful of new neighborhoods, punctuating a welcome sign of recovery for the local economy: Gilbert is growing again. Despite last year's 13 percent increase in home permits issued, Gilbert remains well short of the gaudy building numbers consistently seen until 2007. From 1996 to 2006, Gilbert issued more than 3,000 home permits every year but one, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics. In 2004, that number peaked at 5,071.
